MEDICAL MARIJUANA-DEEP SOUTH
ATLANTA — Medical marijuana has been a non-starter in the Deep South for years, where many Republican lawmakers feared even that step could lead to more widespread drug use and social ills. That now appears to be changing, with proposals to legalize a form of medical marijuana gaining momentum across several states. The key to changing their minds: stories of children suffering from medical conditions that could be eased with access to cannabis oil, which has very little of the chemical known for making marijuana users feel high. Says Georgia Rep. Allen Peake, who acknowledges he is an unlikely champion of the cause: "Once people realize it's not a 6-year-old smoking a joint, most folks realize this is the compassionate thing to do."
