NAME: Joseph Avellone

AGE: 65; born Sept. 29, 1948

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College, 1970. Doctor of medicine from Harvard Medical School, 1974. Master's in public administration, Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, 1977.

CAREER: Avellone was a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital from 1979 to 1983 before moving into health care administration. He served as chief operating officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts from 1994 to 1997; CEO of Veritas Medicine from 2000 to 2007; and senior vice president of Parexel International Corp. from 2007 to 2013. He was a lieutenant commander in U.S. Navy Reserves, Navy Medical Corps from 1979 to 1991. Avellone served three terms on the Wellesley board of selectmen from 1991 to 1997.

FAMILY: Lives in Wellesley with his wife, Sandy. The couple has three adult children.
