Vt. gov. to substance abuse treatment program

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Gov. Peter Shumlin will be holding a press conference in Burlington on the expansion of an early intervention and treatment program for young adults at risk of alcohol and drug abuse.

The event will be held at 11:15 Friday at the Community Health Center.

On Tuesday, Shumlin and state officials rolled out a new program aimed at rehabilitating drug users in Rutland County. The goal of rapid intervention is to identify offenders with multiple past misdemeanor convictions and integrate them into a pre-court, 90-day drug treatment program. If participants successfully complete the program, they will not be prosecuted. Only those with nonviolent offenses will be eligible.
