Obama congratulates Tunisian leader on new gov't

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has congratulated Tunisia's new interim prime minister on the formation of a new government and a landmark constitution.

The White House says that in a phone call Monday with Mehdi Jomaa, Obama commended all of Tunisia's political parties for working together to secure gains made since the country's 2011 revolution. The uprising to overthrow Tunisia's dictator sparked the broader Arab Spring movement that swept through the region.

Jomaa's new government will be focused on restoring security and reviving the economy. Jomaa is also tasked with guiding Tunisia to elections for a new parliament and a president later this year.

The White House says Obama invited Jomaa to visit Washington this year to help their countries build their relationship.
