Cianci back amid cancer; won't rule out mayor run

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci (see-AN'-see) is returning to his jobs as a TV commentator and radio talk show host after taking two weeks off following a cancer diagnosis.

The 72-year-old Cianci was back on air Monday at WLNE-TV, where he is a political analyst. He planned to resume his show at WPRO-AM Monday afternoon.

Cianci says doctors found a malignant abscess, and he had surgery Jan. 21. Since then, he has had one chemotherapy treatment. He's scheduled for seven more, then expects to receive radiation.

Cianci won't discuss what kind of cancer he has, but says he has been told it's curable, and he feels great.

Cianci was convicted of corruption in 2002 and went to prison.

He says he's not ruling out a run in this year's mayoral race.
