Officials release report on Salmonella outbreak

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — Health officials say beans soaked in a plastic-lined horse trough may be responsible for a Salmonella outbreak in north Alabama.

The News Courier of Athens (http://bit.ly/1j6jlLp ) reports that state health officials named the house trough as one of several possible sources of contamination.

The Alabama Department of Public Health says some food was handled without gloves. The beans also were not monitored for temperature.

About 50 people became sick after eating at the Bean Day lunch on Oct. 4. The event is a fundraiser in Athens.

As many as 300 people ate at the lunch. The event was hosted by the Athens-Limestone Foundation for Aging and held at a church.
