NM proposes sale of national historic landmark

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Western outpost made famous by the Buffalo Soldiers and their battles with Apache warriors is up for sale.

It's one of many landmarks around the country facing the wrecking ball as tight budgets and politics shift sentiment for what history is worth saving.

Abandoned now, Fort Bayard has become a drain on New Mexico's coffers and the state is desperate for ideas as historic preservation has lost funding over the last several years.

The Save America's Treasures program, which helped restore the Star-Spangled Banner, Rosa Parks' bus and other projects, has been eliminated. And the preservation grants awarded by the National Park Service are a fraction of what they once were.

Critics say that preservation, despite the historical value, are too costly.
