CINCINNATI (AP) — A veteran Cincinnati-area officeholder says he won't be running in the Democratic Ohio governor's race.
Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune (POR'-toon) has been trying to line up a running mate while gauging support around the state for his challenge to presumptive Democratic nominee Ed FitzGerald. The 55-year-old Portune had scheduled an announcement on his plans last week, then had to postpone because no one had agreed to run with him as lieutenant governor.
Candidates for the May 6 primary have a Feb. 5 filing deadline.
FitzGerald is the Cuyahoga County Executive and has been running for months with the backing of state party leaders. But Portune had said he was hearing from rank-and-file Democrats a desire for a choice.
No Republicans have filed to oppose Gov. John Kasich (KAY-sik).
