Southfield mayor joins crowded congressional race

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) — Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence is running for the Detroit-area congressional seat to be vacated by Gary Peters, who is running for U.S. Senate.

Lawrence announced her campaign Wednesday for the 14th Congressional District. The Democrat and Detroit native has served as Southfield's mayor for a dozen years and in 2010 was gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero's running mate.

Many Democrats are running for the Democratic-leaning congressional seat in 2014. State Rep. Rudy Hobbs along with state Sens. Vincent Gregory and Bert Johnson are among those with campaigns.

The district includes parts of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Southfield, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield and Pontiac.
