Official: Norovirus made Va. hospital workers sick

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A health official says norovirus is to blame for making at least 30 workers sick earlier this month at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian.

Chesterfield Health District director Dr. Parham Jaberi tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch ( that health officials are trying to pinpoint the source of the virus. He says among the possibilities are an employee-recognition event that had food prepared by an outside caterer. He says many of the sickened employees had eaten there.

Jaberi says an inspection of the hospital's food preparation area showed it wasn't the source of the virus, and no sources of contamination were identified at the food supplier.

Norovirus spreads through contact with contaminated surfaces or by consuming contaminated food or liquids. The virus can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and cramping.
