Former Va. gov, wife indicted for corruption

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A 14-count federal indictment of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, portrays a couple who were deeply entrenched in credit card debt even before Bob McDonnell took office.

The indictment also says they were willing to accept lavish gifts from the owner of a company that makes health supplements. The McDonnells were indicted Tuesday on federal corruption charges.

Bob McDonnell told a news conference Tuesday night that he had already apologized and returned more than $120,000 in gifts and loans to former Star Scientific Inc. CEO Jonnie Williams. But he insisted he did nothing illegal, and called the indictment an "unjust overreach" by federal prosecutors.
