SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — An emaciated dog whose progress has been monitored closely by thousands of Santa Fe Animal Shelter Facebook fans has been diagnosed with lymphoma.
Shelter staff say Raphael's cancer was found last week after a lump was removed from his shoulder.
The mixed breed dog was brought in by a good Samaritan from Pojoaque in October weighing just 45 pounds. The shelter did a battery of tests to see why he has having trouble keeping weight on but couldn't find a cause. He finally put on enough weight to go to a foster home and he now weighs close to 82 pounds.
Weight loss can be a symptom of the lymphoma.
Shelter officials say they don't know how long Raphael has to live. They say he will remain in his foster home.
