Lake Erie anglers hoping for decent ice fishing

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) — The ice fishing season along western Lake Erie has been up and down so far this winter.

Cold temperatures early in January made some spots between Toledo and Sandusky suitable for ice fishing, but a warm-up last weekend left some of those same spots with unsteady ice.

The Port Clinton News-Herald ( ) reports that anglers now are hoping that the colder weather will give them another chance to get out on the ice.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recommends going out with an experienced guide. Those who patrol the lake say that no ice is completely safe.

The head of the department's Lake Erie Law Enforcement Unit says it's best to get a report of the conditions before heading out, and that you shouldn't go on the ice alone.
