NY remains could be missing autistic teen

NEW YORK (AP) — A law enforcement official says police are investigating whether human remains found near a shoreline in Queens are those of an autistic teen who disappeared three months ago.

Fourteen-year-old Avonte Oquendo (ah-VAHN'-tay oh-KEHN'-doh) was last seen on Oct. 4 walking out of his school. His disappearance sparked a massive search.

An official with direct knowledge of the case says a person shooting photos near the East River discovered what looked like an arm. Police responding Thursday night also found a torso and legs in the water. A shoe was also recovered.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

It could take several days for a medical examiner to identify the remains and determine a cause of death.

The remains were found at least nine miles from where Avonte was last seen.
