COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Officials at a central Ohio zoo say its two female polar bears aren't pregnant, confirming the prediction of a specially trained beagle that uses a smell test to detect polar bear pregnancies.
Staff at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium had monitored the bears in special dens in case the prediction by the dog, named Elvis, was wrong. Confirming pregnancies in the massive bears is difficult, so the beagle is trained to sniff for proteins that scientists say are found only from pregnant polar bears.
It turns out his predictions for the Columbus bears, Anana and Aurora, were correct. The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1bVB3bA ) reports the bears have been moved back to their regular exhibit, and the zoo hopes they'll mate again with its male polar bear.
