MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A new apartment complex in Minneapolis is providing a place to call home for a group of people who often struggle to find one: older, low-income gays and lesbians.
Spirit on Lake opened in September and is fully occupied. It's only the second affordable housing complex in the United States marketed primarily to older members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
Spirit on Lake residents say it's a place to feel safe, be themselves and avoid growing old alone.
A New York-based advocacy group estimates there are 1.5 million openly gay seniors in the U.S., and that the number will double by 2030.
Similar projects are now under construction in Chicago and Philadelphia, and more are on the drawing board elsewhere.
