Police identify man killed by officers near Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Police in a city north of Dayton have identified the man who was killed by an officer during a downtown shootout over the weekend.

Troy police said 30-year-old Franklin Jones III was fatally shot early Sunday.

Police say officers traded shots with the Jones after finding him an alley. They say he had shot 24-year-old Sammy Butler before shooting at officers.

The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/JEvGGO ) reports that Troy Sgt. Jeff Kunkleman was shot in the leg during the exchange of gunfire. He was taken to a Dayton hospital and is now recovering at home. He and three other officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.

Troy, with about 25,000 residents, is about 20 miles north of Dayton.
