CLEVELAND (AP) — An Ohio man convicted of fatally shooting his ailing wife in her hospital bed says he understands what he did was a mistake.
Sixty-eight-year-old John Wise of Massillon (MAS'-ih-luhn) spoke to WKYC-TV after he was sentenced Friday to six years in prison. While understanding it was a mistake, Wise said he believes what he did was what his wife wanted. They had discussed not wanting to be bedridden in their declining years.
His attorney plans to seek clemency from the governor and has mounted an online petition drive in support of Wise. Defense attorney Paul Adamson said Wednesday that it took time to arrange the online petition, but it's now set up.
The governor's spokesman has declined to comment on the potential clemency issue.
