DONALDSONVILLE, La. (AP) — State police say three separate traffic accidents over a mile-long stretch of a foggy highway in south Louisiana involved 21 vehicles and left one person dead.

Trooper Jared Sandifer said police weren't sure of the cause of the Tuesday morning accident, but expected the thick fog to have been a factor.

Workers had cleared the two-lane Louisiana Highway 1 of damaged trucks and cars compacted like accordions by early afternoon, more than six hours after the crashes shut down the roadway.

Sandifer said 62-year-old Donald L. Jenkins, of Plaquemine, was killed. Injuries to six others in the accidents were described as minor.

The crashes happened around 5 a.m., just north of the town of Donaldsonville, roughly 40 miles west of New Orleans.
