House members retiring in Iowa, Utah and Virginia

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Three veteran House members in Iowa, Virginia and Utah have decided not to seek re-election next year.

Republicans Tom Latham of Iowa and Frank Wolf of Virginia represent competitive districts in states that could go either way in the next presidential election.

Democrat Jim Matheson of Utah is a moderate in a GOP-leaning district. His retirement gives Republicans a chance to gain a seat.

Democrats need a net gain of 17 seats to take control of the House.

Republicans insist that they will maintain their House majority and even build on it as President Barack Obama's political struggles and the troubled rollout of the health care law weigh down Democrats.
