Retrial date set in NY motivational speaker death

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City prosecutors are headed toward retrying a man whose murder conviction was overturned in a motivational speaker's stabbing.

The district attorney's office had talked about a potential plea deal for Kenneth Minor. But no agreement was reached, and on Thursday, a judge set a February retrial date.

Minor says he helped Jeffrey Locker kill himself and make it resemble a robbery in 2009. Investigators found evidence Locker planned his demise.

In New York, causing or aiding a suicide is a form of manslaughter punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Minor had been willing to plead guilty to that but was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years to life.

A state appeals court says the now-retired trial judge misinterpreted the law.
