NY prosecutor shuts down illegal puppy sellers

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York's attorney general is cracking down on operations that illegally sell puppies to unsuspecting consumers.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office has permanently barred a woman in Buffalo and one in the Syracuse area from selling animals or becoming licensed pet dealers. He says they had been selling sickly puppies.

The attorney general's office reached an agreement with the Syracuse-area woman, who's accused of buying puppies on Craigslist, keeping them in poor condition and reselling them illegally.

Schneiderman's office also got a court order against a woman in Buffalo who posed as a breeder. Officials say she actually bought puppies cheaply or obtained them for free online and sold them to consumers who reported fleas, filth and illness.

Schneiderman plans to discuss the cases Friday in Syracuse.
