NJ boy to be laid to rest with full police honors

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — A northern New Jersey town is holding a funeral with full police honors for a 10-year-old boy.

Michael Feeney was named Ridgewood's honorary police chief for 2013 before succumbing to cancer last week. The Hawes Elementary School fifth-grader was running for office at his school and was a huge New York Giants fan.

Feeney had been struggling for four years with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare, aggressive and often fatal bone cancer that usually develops in children and young adults. He is being laid to rest Tuesday with funeral service honors usually reserved for members of the police force.

Residents of the Bergen County town say the boy was an inspiration. The police department plans to name a future junior police academy after him.
