Longtime photographer heads Ohio holiday parade

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (AP) — A newspaper photographer found himself on the other side of the lens when he rode as grand marshal in a Christmas parade in the central Ohio town he's covered for nearly six decades.

Virgil Shipley joined the Mount Vernon News shortly after he got out of the service and has worked for the newspaper in the town northeast of Columbus for more than 58 years.

On Sunday, the 86-year-old Shipley — one of the most recognizable people in the community — led the annual Christmas Parade and Walk riding in a Maserati with his grandchildren, Kaliegh and Garrett Meeks.

The newspaper (http://bit.ly/1c0A4sI ) says Shipley was reluctant to accept the request to serve as grand marshal. He said he'd rather honor others who do good things in the community.
