GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A state senator from suburban Grand Rapids says he won't challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in the 2014 Republican primary.
Mark Jansen of Kent County's Gaines Township said Thursday that people have "strongly encouraged" him to run for the seat over the past two years. But he says he's decided to focus on helping Michigan's economic recovery as a state legislator.
Amash is a libertarian-leaning conservative who has gained a bigger profile from battles with House Republican leadership and his stand against the collection of Americans' phone records. But he's upset some business leaders in his western Michigan district who say they want more pragmatic representation.
Investment adviser Brian Ellis announced Oct. 8 that he intends to challenge Amash in the Republican primary.
