Psychologist: Ohio man who shot wife aware of act

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A psychologist says an Ohio man charged with fatally shooting his wife in her hospital bed shows no signs of suffering from mental health problems and knew his actions were unlawful.

Dr. Lynn Luna Jones testified Friday for the prosecution in the Akron trial of 68-year-old John Wise. The Massillon (MAS'-ih-luhn) man is pursuing an insanity defense in the August 2012 slaying.

Jones' testimony disagrees with that of an expert hired by the defense. Dr. Marc Janoson says he determined Wise was severely depressed and wasn't fully aware of the unlawfulness of his actions.

Prosecutors contend Wise acted intentionally. Police say they found an apologetic note written by Wise in the hospital room.

Closing arguments in the case were expected Friday afternoon before it is turned over to the jury.
