PARIS (AP) — Reality bites — even in the dreamy world of Surrealism, the 20th century's key artistic movement that included Andre Breton and Salvador Dali.
So in 1927, when the dreamy Surrealists decided to face reality and join the French Communist Party, it nearly spelled their end. After all, how could a movement used to escaping to imaginary landscapes and dreams ever survive the shock of Marxist politics in between the wars?
An exhibit entitled "Surrealism and the object," opened Wednesday at Paris' Pompidou Center answers this question.
It tells the previously untold story of how the Surrealists channeled their message through blocks of wood, mannequins and other everyday, Communist-friendly objects to change the face of 20th-century art, enticing Pablo Picasso and Juan Miro.
