IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Two University of Iowa professors will host a public discussion next week about gun control and the mentally ill.
The UI Alumni Association will host the Nov. 6 event at the Cedar Rapids Public Library as part of its Lifelong Learning series. It will feature associate law dean Todd Pettys and psychiatry professor James Potash.
Pettys is expected to describe the U.S. Supreme Court's rulings on the right to possess a firearm and efforts by lawmakers to potentially limit those rights for people with mental illness and who are considered dangerous by law enforcement.
Potash will discuss the importance of treatment for the mentally ill in Iowa.
The event is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to register by noon Wednesday at the Lifelong Learning website.
