RUSSIAVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A balloon launched in Indiana to honor a boy who died of brain cancer has brought a heartfelt message to students at the Massachusetts school where it landed.
The white balloon was one of 1,500 released at Western Primary in memory of Mason Hopkins. The boy died Oct. 5 after a three-year battle with brain cancer.
The Kokomo Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1gBjG8c ) the balloon landed 945 miles away at CD Hunking Middle School in Haverhill, Mass.
Hunking Principal Jared Fulgoni says an attached note that said Mason would be missed hit home at the school. A night janitor lost his 8-year-old son to brain cancer several years ago, and a middle school student recently died of cancer.
Fulgoni wants the two schools to stay connected through letters.
