ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana researcher is launching a study of mental health issues in Latino youth in hopes of improving the services they receive.
Dr. Irene P.K. Park of Indiana University School of Medicine South Bend says she chose Elkhart and St. Joseph counties as the study's focus because both have strong Latino populations. St. Joseph County's population is well established, but Elkhart County's is still relatively new. That can make it more difficult to find mental health services.
The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/19TrFId ) Park and her team hope to study 270 families over a two-year period.
The study will focus on those ages 12 to 17, but each child and parent will be screened for depression and anxiety and directed to local services if needed.
