NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Christian comedian says many of the clubs he works in wish that he wouldn't mention Jesus.
Bone Hampton received the Dove Award for Christian comedy at Tuesday evening's ceremony in Nashville.
In his acceptance speech, Hampton said that when he performs at regular comedy clubs, the management often asks, "Why do you have to tell everybody that you're a Christian comedian? Just be clean."
Hampton said he tells them that he doesn't want the audience to be surprised when he mentions Jesus in his act.
He explained, "The comedy clubs, they don't mind you being clean. They just don't like you mentioning Jesus." But Hampton said he makes it clear that wherever he goes, Jesus goes, and gets due credit.
