ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — Health officials say they've determined that white beans served at a recent "Bean Day" fundraiser in Athens were the source of a salmonella outbreak that sickened dozens of people.
Danny Yocom, director of labs at the Athens hospital, said Tuesday that 50 people associated with the outbreak came to the hospital's emergency room, and 13 were admitted.
The Decatur Daily reports (http://bit.ly/GXYXeK ) that the Oct. 4 fundraiser was sponsored by the Athens-Limestone Foundation on Aging. Jackie Jackson, outgoing chairwoman of the Foundation on Aging, declined to comment.
