BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center officials say the hospital was investigated after two emergency room nurses failed to immediately care for a patient showing no signs of life.
A news release from the Bennington hospital Monday said the patient arrived Oct. 2, complaining of back pain. Following an initial assessment by nurses, the patient was found dead by a non-clinical staff member shortly afterward. The staffer notified the two nurses who were initially caring for the patient; neither responded.
A physician was later alerted of the death by another nurse. The cause of death is unknown. An autopsy was ordered.
SVMC reported the incident to the state. Inspectors found staff failed to follow policy.
The Bennington Banner reports (http://bit.ly/1hpDBC8) SVMC is required to correct its deficiencies and will be reevaluated soon.
