MIAMI (AP) — Nearly 200 people are expected to walk in an event in Miami that raises awareness for the blind or visually impaired.
Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired will celebrate White Cane Day on Tuesday by having participants walk down along a busy street to raise awareness for the White Cane Laws.
A statement from the group explains that White Cane Day is a national event that celebrates the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the symbol of independence for the blind, the white cane.
White Cane Day is considered to be "Independence Day," the statement says, and is symbolized by the white cane that enables blind people to negotiate obstacles and travel safely. President Lyndon B. Johnson instituted White Cane Safety Day in 1964.
