Rebuilt 1813 warship in dry dock in Cleveland

CLEVELAND (AP) — A reconstructed U.S. warship that won the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie is taking a break after a season of marking the historic bicentennial.

The two-masted Niagara has been taken into dry dock at Cleveland's Great Lakes Towing Co. shipyard for routine repairs.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of October.

The brig is a reconstruction of the flagship from which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry defeated a British fleet during the War of 1812.

The Erie, Pa.-based Niagara is owned and maintained by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a state agency.

The Niagara sailed the Great Lakes during the summer to mark the bicentennial of Perry's victory. The highlight was a September reenactment of the battle at Put-In-Bay off Sandusky.
