PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — An annual walk in Rhode Island to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer has brought in $700,000.
Officials with the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer said Wednesday that some 16,000 people took part in the 18th annual event. It was held Sunday for the first time in its new location in downtown Providence.
Organizers had hoped to raise $1 million for the Cancer Society's efforts against breast cancer. Donations will continue to be collected through the end of the year.
Making Strides events are held across the country and raise about $60 million each year. The walks honor breast cancer survivors, educate people about the importance of prevention and early detection and raise money for research.
