WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is canceling his planned appearance at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's annual gala due to the partial government shutdown.
Obama and first lady Michelle Obama were planning to attend the Washington event Wednesday, but both are canceling. It's the first year as president that Obama won't attend the event, where actress Salma Hayek and others will be honored. The institute says Obama started attending in 2008 when he was a presidential candidate.
Much of the federal government shut down Tuesday after Congress missed the deadline to pass a temporary spending measure. It's the first shutdown in 17 years.
