FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 2007 fatal stabbing when the victim tried to shake hands.
A judge in Fort Worth on Tuesday ordered 53-year-old Donald Steven Bullard committed to a maximum-security state mental hospital.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/19EeTK5 ) reports prosecutors say Bullard stabbed Donald Punch when both were on a street and the victim attempted to shake hands. Bullard was arrested later after allegedly using a knife to threatened another person. The knife carried Punch's DNA.
Bullard, who faced murder and aggravated assault charges, initially was ruled incompetent for trial. Psychiatric professionals later concluded Bullard was competent.
Mental health experts for both sides testified Bullard has a schizoaffective disorder with paranoia and delusions and wasn't sane during the slaying.
