BOSTON (AP) — Voters in Boston are taking a major step toward ushering in a new political era for the city.
Twelve candidates are vying in Tuesday's preliminary election for mayor. The two top vote-getters will move on to the Nov. 5 election and compete to succeed Mayor Thomas Menino, who is retiring after more than 20 years in office.
The ability of a candidate to get out the vote is expected to be a decisive factor in the crowded field.
In addition to the mayoral race, 19 candidates are vying for four at-large city council seats, with the top eight advancing to November.
