Report: Mishandling of Ohio weatherization funds

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's government watchdog says local agencies at times mishandled the administration of federal grant money meant to help poor people weatherize their homes.

The report from the Ohio Inspector General cited examples of zip codes wrongly entered into databases, nonexistent Social Security numbers identifying recipients and housing units listed with the wrong street name or house number.

The Inspector General referred the results of Tuesday's report to the U.S. Department of Energy and the Ohio Auditor.

The review was a follow-up to a 2011 review that found the state Department of Development didn't do enough inspections to make sure that groups weatherizing homes actually did the work they were paid for.

At issue was a $266 million grant Ohio received for weatherization through the 2009 federal stimulus act.
