CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire health officials will distribute placements with advice about preventing falls to seniors in the Meals on Wheels programs and at locations around the state.
Distribution of the placemats is linked to Saturday's Fall Prevention Awareness Day on the first day of fall.
Health officials say falls are the leading cause of death in those 65 and over nationwide and in New Hampshire, where approximately 105 older Granite Staters die each year from falls.
The mats advise seniors to have all medicines they take — even the over-the-counter drugs — reviewed by their doctors and to exercise at least 15 minutes a day.
Officials also urge seniors to look around their homes for hazards such as loose rugs and weak furniture.
