Purdue teams with Chinese for eye treatments

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University scientists are working with a Chinese eye research center to scour traditional Chinese medicines in a search for new treatments for vision problems.

Purdue and the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong have created a Purdue-based laboratory for their work.

The Shantou eye center has access to the traditional medicines and expertise in creating drug compounds.

The Purdue-based laboratory will use zebra fish as a model to screen compounds that could have benefits for improving fading vision and for treating retinal degeneration.

Retinal degeneration causes irreversible vision loss and is the result of a wide range of disorders and diseases that affect millions of children and adults worldwide.
