GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Officials at a western Pennsylvania prison say all female inmates will be given a pregnancy test whether they say they are with child or not.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/14dICuF ) says Westmoreland County Prison officials say the new policy is being instituted by their health care provider.
Warden John Walton said at Monday's prison board hearing that the need arose after a female inmate gave guards false information several weeks ago.
Walton says the inmate said she wasn't pregnant and wasn't a drug user, but was found to be pregnant and addicted to drugs. He declined to identify the inmate.
Officials said pregnant addicts are immediately taken to a Pittsburgh hospital to be weaned off the drugs or to start methadone treatment due to the danger to the fetus.
