MOSCOW (AP) — Russian emergency officials say that three people have died and more than 30 others are missing and feared dead after a night fire in a psychiatric hospital in northwestern Russia.
The Emergency Situations Ministry said the fire in the one-story building in the village of Luka in the Novgorod region erupted at around 3 a.m. local time Friday (around 2300 GMT Thursday).
It said that 23 of 60 people who were in the building when the blaze broke out were evacuated. Salvage teams found the bodies of two patients and a nurse, who died while trying to rescue others.
More than 34 people have remained unaccounted for and feared dead. Police and emergency officials have been combing a nearby forest for patients who might have run away from the fire.
