AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal is stepping down after six years, saying it's been an honor to have held the position.
The paper reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/15VkhKG) that Andrea Mathewson will retire at the end of September as publisher of the newspaper and Ohio.com.
The 54-year-old Mathewson became the Beacon Journal's first female publisher on June 7, 2007, less than a year after the Beacon Journal was bought by Black Press Ltd. of Canada.
The Beacon says that despite challenges facing the industry as revenue shifts from print, the Alliance for Audited Media places the combined readership of the paper and Ohio.com among the top 25 U.S. newspapers for readership growth.
The publishing company also launched a series of community-oriented websites under Mathewson through Ohio.com
