NEW YORK (AP) — A Brooklyn federal judge has slashed the $1 million awarded to three children of an allegedly abusive father who died after gastric bypass surgery.
The Daily News (http://nydn.us/18Xi7d9 ) reports that Judge Leo Glasser acknowledged the amount was excessive and reduced the amount to $150,000. He left intact the $5 million to Warren Jupiter's widow.
Glasser noted the relationship between Jupiter and his children appeared to have improved before his death in 2005 from complications of bariatric surgery.
The Brooklyn U.S. attorney's office had appealed the payout for the children. It noted that Jupiter verbally abused his son and failed to financially support the children.
The children had sought compensation for the loss of their father's nurturing. They testified that they had a close relationship with him.
