AMES, Iowa (AP) — Former Pennsylvania senator and GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum says the Republican party must do a better job reaching out to working class voters.
The 2012 Iowa caucus winner says that by focusing on business owners in the last election, the GOP failed to connect with "job holders."
Santorum says the party should reject the notion that "if we build the economy, all boats will rise."
Santorum spoke in Ames, Iowa, Saturday during a conference organized by the conservative Christian group, the Family Leader. Other speakers at the gathering include Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and reality show star Donald Trump.
The daylong event will be one of many candidate cattle calls in the grueling runup to the 2016 presidential election.
