Memorial planned for fallen Vegas police rescuer

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas Strip procession and a memorial service at a Henderson megachurch are set for a 36-year-old police search-and-rescue officer who died after falling from a helicopter hoist line while rescuing a stranded hiker.

Central Christian Church officials say up to 2,900 people can be seated in the main auditorium for the Monday service for Officer David Vanbuskirk.

A police procession is being planned to run south on Las Vegas Boulevard to the 215 Beltway, and east to the U.S. 95 freeway. It will end at the church.

Vanbuskirk died July 22 when he fell from the hoist line while the hiker was being lifted to safety from a mountain ledge about 30 miles northwest of downtown Las Vegas. The area was off-limits to hikers.
