DETROIT (AP) — A relative of a Michigan woman who died in Syria says her family still lacks confirmation she was killed last month during fighting.

Deidra Mansfield told The Associated Press that federal officials haven't provided a death certificate for her cousin, 33-year-old Nicole Mansfield. She and family members say agents visited them May 30 and informed them of her death.

A U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly says the State Department hasn't received a death certificate from Syrian authorities. The official says the Czech Republic — the U.S. protecting power in Syria — is working with the Syrians to get one and return the body.

Relatives say Mansfield converted to Islam several years ago.
