MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) — A 91-year-old Ohio veteran of World War II has finally received his medals.
Melvin Dull of Ashland arrived by limousine to an event Thursday arranged by the Richland County Veterans Service Commission. Dull, who uses a wheelchair, fought back tears as the decorations — including a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and POW medal — were pinned to his suit.
Dull's daughter said the family was told that his records had been lost in a fire, preventing him from receiving the medals earlier.
The Mansfield News Journal (http://ohne.ws/128kQM8) reports that Dull served in the U.S. Army in 1945, most of the time in Germany's Black Forest. He was captured in May 1945.
After the war, Dull became a foundry worker, married and raised five children.
